Saraswati Puja. Spring begins.
Vasant Panchami marks the arrival of Vasant, the spring, and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, learning, music and the arts. An old story tells that when Brahma created the world, it lay silent and lifeless until he brought forth Saraswati. With a touch of her veena she filled the world with sound, speech, melody and wisdom, and so this day is set aside to honour her and seek the gift of learning. In the fields the mustard blooms in waves of gold, and yellow becomes the colour of the day.
On this day people wear yellow, offer yellow flowers and sweets, and worship Saraswati at home and in schools. Students, musicians and artists place their books, pens and instruments before the goddess and pray for wisdom and success, especially as the exam season nears. It is a gentle, hopeful festival, the meeting point of the renewal of nature and the renewal of the mind.
Vasant Panchami is one of the most auspicious days of the whole year. It is an Abujh Muhurat, a day so blessed that ceremonies may be held on it without even consulting the Panchang. For this reason it is a favourite day for weddings, griha pravesh (house warming), naming ceremonies and the start of new ventures. Above all it is the day of Vidyarambh, also called Aksharabhyas, when young children are lovingly guided to write their very first letters, in the belief that learning begun under Saraswati’s blessing lasts a lifetime.
Vasant Panchami 2027 is on Thursday, 11 February 2027 (Magha Shukla Panchami), the day of Goddess Saraswati and the start of spring.
Yellow stands for knowledge, energy and the golden bloom of spring, especially the mustard fields, and it is the colour dear to Goddess Saraswati. Wearing yellow and offering yellow flowers and sweets is believed to invite her blessings.
Vidyarambh, also called Aksharabhyas, is the ceremony where young children write their first letters, beginning their education. Vasant Panchami is considered the most auspicious day to start learning, under the blessing of Goddess Saraswati.
